Took the plunge

I bought a new Desktop computer.

We already have an older one, and an even older laptop, so this might be seen as excessive. But it's all a part of the grand plan. I think I'll set up the old laptop as a server for when we get broadband, and then link the other ones to it. The laptop is still good as a server but is a bit clunky now.

Our current Desktop, which we inherited from Pregnancy Help when it closed down, runs like it's filled with treacle. It needs a good clean up and rebuild from scratch. I have been putting this off as it's the only beastie we have. Once the new one arrives and is set up, I get to the process of pulling the older one apart; and maybe throw in a RAM upgrade in the process.

I was thinking of rebuilding the laptop using Linux; perhaps Fedora Core 4 (I downloaded it last year and made CD's). But this raises a whole lot of questions, the main one being, how then do I attach Windows XP (professional) machines to it?

I don't really want to have to buy a book on it. I guess I'll need to get googling nearer the time all this happens (which won't be until we are in a new flat and are getting the broadband connected).

Hmmm...

Which Broadband provider would people recommend? Any ideas on the best deal. We are unlikely to be downloading heaps of stuff, probably not more than a couple of gig a month I'd guess...

In other news I have been asked to preach at a Good Friday service, which should be fun. I don't know if anyone would be interested, but it is at 147 Thorndon Quay (on level 2, at the top of the stairs), from 11 to 12. Apparently they are putting on Hot Cross Buns afterwards, if this is a bribe it wouldn't work for me. I don't really like them, spicy, fruity bread is just evil...

Anyway, we'll be there from about 10:30 I suppose. Oh, and in case it's not clear it's on Good Friday ;)

I set up an Apache server with PHP 5 and MySQL on my laptop as the Doghouse Development Server so I can build my dogblog software and my brothers project. Completed a preliminary design for the DDS and the Dogblog.

That's the relatively easy stuff done. Now I need to start looking at building the database and how to code the site for the Dogblog software.

I am also working on a bible study on "Truth" as I have been musing about it over at the The Weltanschauung. I have made sligh inroads into this and have come up with some interesting stuff already. There a real sense of the moral element to the truth that is coming through Like it's not enough to know the truth, it's what you do with it that counts.

Interesting.

Haven't done much on the excercise front as yet, or the further acadmic studies. I want to nail down some other things first, like a job :)

Hopefully this one with the DIA works out*.

Oh, I should add that I have one design up in my cafepress shop. Check it out. I think the design is a little small. It was made with the warning label generator which is a pretty cool toy.

I have lots of other ideas, I just need to actually get around to doing them...

Which seems more likely since I stopped watching TV...

Daily Geekdom: I bought one and a half tones of computers yesterday, and have another three quarters of a tone of laptops coming :)
Current Obsession: PHP code for my projects.

*Had an interview on monday that went very well, should have a second interview next week.
