24 things

A couple of days ago Zoe was having a debate with my Mum. Zoe reckoned the plural of mouse was mouses and mum was saying that the plural of mouse was mice. They went into the Butchers and while there asked him whate he thought. He said the plural was mouses(!).

Anyway, Mum said to Zoe that when Natalya and I got home maybe she could ask us (at least we would back her up). And Zoe replied: "Yeah, 'cause my dad knows 24 things...And my mum knows 25!" (Natalya was rather pleased that she knows one more thing than I do, but she won't tell me what she knows in case I figure out that one thing :)

Anyway, I have been thinking about this ever since. And I have decided to come up with the list of 24 things I know. After some thought I realised I'd have to set some limits on what was meant by "know". Given that Zoe used it with such certainty (I guess two of the things she knows are that I know 24 things and Natalya knows 25) that it should be "know" in the sense of have no doubts about.

I have actually come up with my list, but it is in a book at home, so I'll post it this evening. Right know my challenge is to anyone else to see if they can come up with a list of 24 things that they definitively know.

Hmm.

What a cool wee story, and a nice challenge. I'll see if I can put something together, but I suspect it's the kind of thing that would take a surprising amount of thought...

It is harder than it looks
But I found it quite rewarding. One of things I think we don't do enough of in our busy lives is taking to time examine things like this, taking time to examine our beleifs and values, our Welyanschauung. This is one way of doing that., though it's not a complete worldview, rather an set of symptoms as to what my worldview actually is.

Hmmm...this might be a good tool for developing and understanding characters in stories.

Hmm...that needs more thought

:)

Now I'm wondering how many things Zoe says my sister knows?

Such an adorable story. I will try and think of 24 things.

I'll ask Zoe but I am pretty sure it would be higher than both Natalya and I. I mean Karen is, well, Karen she must know lots of stuff.

Hmm.. I hate to think of things I *know*. Science makes me dislike certainty.

That's funny. Philosophy has the same effect on me, in making me dislike certainty. Which is why I enjoyed this so much. I am uncertain about almost everything in life to some degree. It is gratifying to examine my worldview and see that I am not actually a Skeptic and uncertain about everything.

I am also glad to hear a scientist say that science makes them dislike certainty. I have read, and met, and been taught by, a number of scientists who have exactly the opposite view (which is where the things I know about science come from).

I suspect if I re-examine my list too much it might change; possibly proving that I don't know some of the things, or that I added some things frivolously becausde I couldn't think of 24 things that I actually know.
